Allegheny General Hospital

A class action lawsuit was filed against Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh on behalf of patients who were exposed to drug-resistant bacteria through bronchoscopes that weren't properly sterilized in 2002. Sixteen patients were exposed to the Pseudomonas bacteria, which is common but can cause pneumonia in severely ill people. Also named as defendants in the suit are Olympus America, the maker of the bronchoscopes; and Steris Corp., which makes a machine that sterilizes the bronchoscopes.
