Ontario Government

Several nurses from Toronto are seeking class action status for a lawsuit filed against their provincial government. Over 50 health care workers are claiming they were not given significant warning regarding the SARS virus. Doctors in the same hospitals were provided with protective information 15 days before nurses. All those involved in the lawsuit were infected with SARS during a deadly outbreak in Toronto two years ago. They are each seeking $10 million in punitive damages and $7.5 million in general damages. The Ontario Nurses Association is accusing the province of negligence in handling the 2003 outbreak and alleges officials waited too long before informing nurses about how to protect themselves.
