Maytag Corp.

The $2 million settlement has been signed by a St. Clair County judge in the class action lawsuit filed on behalf of consumers who purchased the company's Neptune front-loading washing machines from April 1997 to July 2004. I think Whirlpool & Maytag should have contacted buyers regarding this problem, I had many problems with my Neptune washer. This was my 3rd Maytag washer, paid alot for it and it was the worst washer I ever had. Left brown spots on my whites sometimes, left like oil stains on my darks, clothes smelled musty. Tried using washer cleaner, tried running through a cycle with iron out, then just started adding Scent Out (used for washing hunting clothes) to the wash cycle to help kill the odor.. Also, the machine would shut down in the middle of the wash cycle, the door would remain locked, so couldn't get clothes out. Would just have to wait until i decided to come back on, sometimes 24 hours! Finally purchased a new machine. Hope this one is improved!!

I had to get rid of some of our color and black cloth because of the mildew smell that I couldn't get rid of and didn't want to take a chance on the health risk. I've had Searse service my machine when it was new and all they could tell me was to run it on rapid wash with 3 cups of bleach. But it does not help my colored close.

I would like to bring legal action to the Whirlpool and Maytag Corporations in regards to selling defective front loading washing machines which suffer inherent design flaws on behalf of purchasers of the machines. The suit would claim that there are inherent defects in the washer's design and that despite many complaints from consumers that the machines cause a mildew smell, mildew and/or mold from inside the machine and the transfer of the mildew smell, mildew and/or mold to clothes and other washed articles, posing serious health risk to consumers. Whirlpool and Maytag have refused to notify consumers of the defect, repair the defect or recall the front loading washers and they have continued to sell the defective machines nationwide. Instead, direct consumers to purchase specialty soaps, developed and endorsed by the two corporations to “clean” said machines.
