Academy of Court Reporting Inc.

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the post secondary school for allegedly promising to award degrees it was not authorized to grant. The lawsuit was filed in the US District Court in Detroit and claims the Academy of Court Reporting defrauded nearly 1,500 students of more than $15 million. The lawsuit alleges the academy told students in January 2007 they must transfer to an Ohio campus if they wish to obtain degrees. Students who paid total tuition of between $23,000 and $38,000 had been told since 2002, when the Clawson campus opened, they could obtain two-year associate's degrees directly from the academy.

I can't believe I found this site. I attended the Academy of Court Reporting in Columbus Ohio from 2001 to 2003. Half the time the teacher was eating and talking the whole class time, and no training was done. I learned nothing at this school, and I have $24,000 in student loans that I feel should be forgiven as the time at the school did nothing for me but put me in student loan debt. When I first signed up, they stated two years to finish for an Associate. After two years of attending, they then stated "oh it usually takes up to 5 years" I hope this school has closed down, and it is not taking anymore money from students. Anyone who has attended this school should have all loans forgiven. Please let me know if this lawsuit do so.

I attended 2003 - 2005 at the Cincinnati downtown location I took “excel” classes to finish in 18 months. I only had my internship left to do and I kept getting the run around about this one or that one falling threw. I was a mother of 4 at the time so I was missing tons of time watching my babies grow up not to mention all the student loan debt I still have hanging over my head. I ended up getting very ill while they were trying to find me a suitable internship and had to take a bit of a leave which they said was fine to take care of my health. When I came back it was well you were gone to long and we had to put other in those spots and the money just isn’t there unless you can pay outta pocket. Which I couldn’t. My kids are older now so I thought about going back for my business degree and went to have my credits transferred and low and behold I find out that all that time I was at ACR I was being scammed. Now I am stuck with student loans they I never in a million years would have agreed to had they said “ Oh we r going to make you miss time with your kids, work like a dog, give you nothing for it, AND make you flip the bill for it all!” The sad part is I had even talked to another college where my transcript was so they said years ago and.i was told nothing about any of this. He just tried to talk me into taking classes there and I never did get my transcript. There has to be something that can be done for us! We should not have to pay for something that was based on a lie.

degree fraud. The recruiter promised mean that my diploma will be the same as an associate's degree from the community college. I was enrolled in a certificate program, that employers overlooked because it wasn't an actual associates degree from community college.

I went to the ACR in Cincinnati from 2005-2007 for Paralegal Studies. After I was there for about a year and a half, I went to the Dean of Students to find out how many more classes I had to complete in order to graduate. Not long before I went to the Dean, our school was supposedly bought by another company. The documentation when I started the ACR program showed that I needed to complete only about 17 classes for the 2 yr Associates Degree. I was expecting to only have about 6 classes left. However, when I asked the Dean to just name the classes, he said do you have a "pen and paper to write them down?" I said 'I don't have that many left" and he said "Oh, there's more than you think". He named 16 more classes!. 16!!! What the what?!!! I was completely blown away. He stated that the new company required all of these new classes in order for me to graduate. After another semester passed, I unfortunately had to leave school for about 6 mths, due to my mother was having medical issues and couldn't watch the children. I worked full-time during the day and she watched them while I went to school at night. When I returned to school, I was told that my financial aid was no longer available due to being out for so long. Although I was a single mother of 3, I was paying for school myself out of pocket in addition to getting loans. To this day, I am still paying off my loans! Unfortunately, there was no way that I could afford to continue, especially with so many classes added. I tried working for law firms, but my knowledge was not enough and I was devastated! So much work, money and time away from my children and for what? To make some schlup a ton of money from being scammed!

WOW!!!, I have been running around for 20 years thinking that I have an associates Degree as a paralegal from the Academy of Court Reporting, I have put this on my resume, as to brag about my legal knowledge, to this day I have seen and communicated with teachers who are still practicing attorney's,that taught me at the school, and no one has ever told me that attending the Academy of Court Reporting was a scam. I attended in 1998 and graduated in 2000, and went on to work in the legal field claiming that I was a "Degreed Paralegal", not to be confused with a paralegal that had a certificate, but a "DEGREE" WOW!!!. Now I feel like a jerk. No, I did not have outstanding student loans, although I did receive the student loans, however, as fast as the school received the loan money, my employer at the time re-paid in FULL for each semester, therefore, when I graduated I was debt free. It was only TODAY, after getting a call from Franklin University that they need my transcripts from High School and The Academy, that I find this out about the school and this class action. And now they are out of business. When I googled the school it shows that they moved to the old Ohio Bell Building at 150 East Gay Street, Columbus, Ohio, however, when I called it sends me to another school entirely and they are not at the location listed. Not sure if I can do anything about it now, BUT I am sure going to put my legal skill to work and try. I currently work and know a lot of attorneys and will consult and review my options. I'll end by just saying WOW!!!!!!!!!!!

I attended The Academy of Court Reporting in Akron, Ohio from 2002 to 2006. I did not obtain my degree because partway through my schooling a policy was implemented that made it unfair and unattainable: a student had to improve their speed by the end of the third quarter or else be removed from the court reporting program. At this point, I was at least $60,000 in student loan debt when the new rule was implemented. I did not progress to 200 words per minute and was removed from the program. Nevermind that I was attending classes, held above a 3.5 GPA, and had all this money into a program. I feel I was wronged.

I attended this school from 1996-1999 and received an Associates Degree that is not worth the paper it is printed on. I never got a job working in the field and racked up over 100,000 in student loans, and I didn't think there was anything that I could do about it. I didn't know the school had closed until I went to get my transcript and was told that they were now the property of another school. I feel that these loans should be forgiven, because we were deceived about the value of the education that we were receiving. The job placement services never found me a job and didn't really make an effort to assist me.

I attended ACR from November 2008- May 2009. Im being billed all the way up to 2010. I didn’t continue once I realized I was getting two checks of Ike 600$ for the two quarters I attended. Every one else would get like 2000$ checks. I knew something wasn’t right then. I was 17 when I enrolled so I kinda knew they were getting over on me and my loans. Me and my sister who was 19 at the time enrolled the same time and took the same classes and her loans are about 10,000 lower then mine. We also stop going the same day. I signed up two days before but our classes started the same day. I believe they were stealing my loans because of my age. They also enrolled me in quarters I didn’t attend. My loan should be forgiven

I attended the Academy of Court Reporting in Akron OH in the early 2000s. I also took out government loans. The only reason I know anything about this school being closed is because I am in the process of requesting transcripts and this is where I was directed. It's a total shame that so many people are left holding the bag for someone else's fraud. Every one of us took out loans based off our belief in the credibility of this school. They should pay and the government should be willing to forgive our loans.

I also attended ACR. I just recently found out the school was closed. I was trying to obtain a copy of my transcripts. I was told for the State of Michigan students, Berks Technical Institute, Wyomissing, PA was the repository for all our transcripts. There is no record of me ever attending. I also contacted the State of MI Licensing & Regulatory Affairs Bureau, as they should also have a copy. NOTHING FOUND! I have thousands in students loans, with no proof (transcript)! I was never notified the school was closing. Not to mention, their false promises of great career opportunities, placement assistance, and over exaggerated income possibility with this so called "education" received from ACR. I have spoken with DOE, student loan provider, State of Michigan. No one has an answer. They just keep telling me to call the same people I have already spoken to. Now, I'm told by the State I should hire an attorney? We need to go after these people for their deceit, and have our loans forgiven. This so called education is not worth anything. Please help!

I, too, was ripped off by this fraudulent school. Some how, this school was able to obtained two loans from the DOE for the same student, enrolled at the same school, for the same course, at the same time. How is that even possible. The school was paid twice for one class. When I contacted the DOE, they have information on file that the loan is due; however, no documentation for the loan itself. I withdrew from the spring class, yet, ACR didn't send my information back until February of the following year (when I had been withdrawn for almost a year). They even held my check and didn't present it to me for almost 6 weeks after they received it. My taxes have been offset twice. They've taken about $17k in income tax money. The cost of tuition wasn't even that high for the brief time I was there. I only attended four quarters (one part, the other three full time). I hated it and dropped the class before wasting even more money. Now, I have two loan companies telling me that I owe them around the same amount of money for one class that wasn't that expensive. They bounce the loan around two or three times a year to keep added "fees" that accumulated a total amount of $3000 in less than six months. I AM PISSED!!!

I went to the academy of court reporting in clawson in 2006. I never filled out any FAFSA paperwork on my own, they did it for me at all I did was sign paperwork. I found out later at another University that that's not how it is supposed to work. Since 2010, I've had to file taxes separately from my husband after the government took $1,400 from our return for my husband's loans to the academy of court reporting. first of all, we stopped going after that semester in 2006 when we found out that the school was no longer or was never accredited. second, we only took two classes each that semester, why was his loans 1400 and mine are like 6,000!? I have refused to pay a penny of that loan, and recently got a letter in the mail that I was going to get garnished. I realized that I'm not getting any younger and would love to go back to school, but I refuse to pay down this loan! I would be happy to, if somebody gave me $6,000 cash or $6,000 worth of an education. There is no way in the world my two classes cost three grand each! plus with all the interest, it is much higher, and I'm not doing it. My credit was already pretty much ruined so, I am hoping this along with the federal debt forgiveness for schools like this will help me. Hopefully it can help my husband get the money he paid to the school back as well. Fingers crossed!

I attended the Cincinnati location from 2003 throuh 2005. At 43 years old I worked very hard to stay at the top of my class while continuing to keep my cleaning business. After graduation and closing my business I quickly realized that finding employment in my field was hard to find and when I did the top pay was $10.00 per hour not the income level we were lead to believe. Being a Private Investigator can be a dangerous profession. I had to get a second job to survive. I paid all but $5000.00 on my loan but life took a turn for the worse when my husband passed away and I was unable to afford to finish paying off my loan. Recently I recieved a letter stating I was over $19,000.00 in debt to them again! Not only was ACR a waste of time and money but I was not properly trained for the situations I had to deal with for a small payday!! Please help!!

I attended the Clawson location and was promised an internship and job placement but I never received either of the two. I was told the school was accredited and I would be able to transfer my credits but that wasn't true. The location is now closed and I was never notified of the school closing or the class action against the school. I am looking for relief for wasted years and finances.

Posting here because, i was also scammed by this ridiculous excuse for a school. The material taught was not anywhere near the collegiate level. I believe I started classes in 2009. They changed to title of my so-called degree in the middle of my 2 years there. I was a student studying Private Investigation then one day I was studying "Security and Investigation." Is that even allowed?

I too have attended the Academy of Court Reporting from 2003 thru 2006. At which time I received my Associates Degree. I racked up over $65,000 in student loans when I was told the tuition per year was $24,000. I'm very upset about this. I would also like to participate in a class action lawsuit.

I attended the Academy of Court Reporting in 2006 and after an honorable discharge from the US Marines. I was enrolled in the private investigator program. Later I found out that the credits were not transferable, transcripts were impossible to get copies of and the school lost it accreditation. I currently have student loans for an unaccredited school. Can you please assist me?

I also attended the Academy of Court Reporting in Clawson for several years and racked up about $44k in loans. They lied to me over and over, telling me all my credits would be transferable to Northwood who they had a partnership with. It wasn't until recently, when I went to contact them for a transcript that I found out they were closed. I have never received anything in the mail stating that they were closed or that there was any class actions. For the first time in my life, I am out of work and was going to go back to school to finish my degree. I am devastated that I am going to have to start over and still have this daunting debt.
If anyone has any links or sites they an share as I would love to be apart of this class action and have my loans forgiven. I cannot believe how many people they took advantage of. It is criminal and they should be prosecuted.

I attended the Cincinnati, Ohio campus in 2006 and was told before filling out a ton of paperwork that this was an accredited school which I found out 3 months into it that is was not so I dropped out to find another school that was. ACR was continuing to take the student loan checks from Sallie Mae when I was not enrolled in anymore classes. They refused to refund me saying I did not drop out even though I did and never returned I am stuck paying loans for education and classes I did not take . Is there anyone else who is in a class action lawsuit I can join ?

Former students interested in moving towards possible legal actions involving CRID. I have created a private Facebook Group called "Court Reporting Institue of Dallas (CRID) Class Action Lawsuit."

There's more power in numbers, so let's explore our options, collaborate on any forgiveness options offered by the state. There are rules regarding school closure in which loans can be forgiven, as well. If you can't join, send me a personal email and will add you to the group. Then we just keep sharing, and hopefully, we can gather enough people to make some change and progress.

Like so many others I have a lot of money owed for student loans from ACR. I did receive a small settlement in 2009 from the class action lawsuit, however it was nowhere close to covering the piece of paper they gave me.
I have been fighting since that time to have my loans forgiven, with no success.

Has anyone been able to get their loans forgiven ?

I went to the Academy of Court Reporting, Euclid campus on Cleveland Ohio. I was going for paralegal and I choose to go to this school because it was direct and close to my family. I was the first one to graduate high school at the time and I didn't realize what to look out for and what not to do when it came to student loans. I was told by the staff and faculty that there was nothing to worry about or fear and getting the loans they suggested would be the best choice. Unfortunately they lied to me, I couldn't even take my transcripts to Tri-C. I mean I was devastated. Here I was out of school with nothing to show for myself but debt. I was heart broken and had no real income to began to pay off this debt. After the school closed. I'm glad I came across this page. Hopefully this isn't a dead end. I'm in the process of contacting the Department of Education to see if my loans can be removed from my credit and my life! Due to the fraudulent acts of Academy Court Reporting it has been nothing but disappointment, confusion, and fraud. I hope we all can be helped and cleared of our debts because of what they have done to us all! I'm praying for everyone who had to go through this.

I attended the Academy of Court Reporting in Cincinnati and was also lied to. The credits do not transfer anywhere and the degree is worthless. I was never told the cost of my classes and after graduation was charged double of what an associates degree should cost. I think these loans should be forgiven and a lawsuit brought to Cincinnati as well. It's ridiculous that these schools are able to do this to people that are trying to better themselves. I was told "We are Nationally Accredited you can transfer you credits to any school" NOT the case at all!!!!!!! If i want to do a 4 year degree I have to start all over! $38,000 for 2 years of NOTHING!!!!!!!

Like So many others, I attended the Court Reporting institute of Houston. Head-quartered in Dallas-the (CRID) . The I went to made sure that every student that enrolled exhaust all the federal aid available to each student. I am in over $80k in student loan debt. No degree and 98 credit hours that can not transfer. I attended from 2003 to 2007. They purposely dictated material that was hard to pass for the speed class we were in. Everyone was on academic probation at the same time. No one finished. The drop rate was higher than the graduation rate. The enrollment rate was high. Many of the students didn't have high school diplomas, and many were displaced "Katrina" victims with grants. We even had classes that didn't have teachers. The sign-in sheets for those classes were left in the break-room. I file a complaint with Texas Workforce Commission. The school is closed in Houston, and so is the location in Dallas, TX. However it is still operating an on-line school. That doesn't satisfy me since I am in thousands of dollar in debt. I wish to reach out to anyone who would be willing to start a class action lawsuit, or an organization to fight against these fraudulent schools.

I have accumulated over $55,000.00 worth of student loans and career training loans from the Academy of Court Reporting, and was told I would have an associate's degree when I finished. Not only was I lied to about the degree, but the quality of education was so poor, and I learned so little, that even though I graduated, I have been unable to find and keep employment in court reporting firms, due to the fact I did not receive adequate training. I was also led to believe I had to purchase stenography machines and software through their supplier, which is also fraudulent information. Software, which costs around $10,000 is not a necessity of a professional court reporter. They manipulated me into thinking I needed this, and then they gave little, if any, training or education on the software. The whole school is one big scam! Students sit there semester after semester without accelerating on their speed (Words Per Minute), and are told by their instructors and by the Dean of the School that if they just keep coming they will get the speed one day. The speed hardly ever comes to most any student. For the few students who do manage to get the speed, it is usually because they have to sit there for years on end. It took me 6 years before I finally passed. I have heard of women who have stayed there for 8 years, 10 years, even 12 years, before they were finally able to graduate with an associates' degree, that means nothing; and a certificate of completion as a stenographer, which I believe means even less, since the teachers never once helped us learn the software, or any important things we deserved to know (considering the cost of the program). Unfortunately the school was a big fat joke and one malicious scam.
I learned no necessary skills I needed to know to become employable.
Meanwhile, thousands and thousands of dollars are being accumulated in student loans, which are so easily available through the Academy's financial office. They charge outrageous prices for tuition and students are made to take classes with little or no benefit, and told they are required, and that in order to get certified from the school, every stenography student must obtain an associate's degree from them!!!!!! I already had a bachelor's degree, and did not want to get an associate's degree from them, but I was told I could not graduate from the school without taking the classes required to obtain an associate's degree. It was just one big lie to get more money from me, money I have to pay back to the federal government now with interest. They also lie about their placement statistics. The placement director cuts every corner, and hardly any of the students who do actually graduate from there are ever placed in an actual court reporting firm or Courtroom. I have been taken advantage of, and feel I was outright manipulated and robbed in this malicious scam. It's caused me extreme financial hardship and my financial life has been devastated . It is very difficult to keep up with the monthly bills from student loans, and career training loans, and my entire retirement account (consisting of $10,000) was wiped out, because all that was pounded through my brain every day in school, was how buying these fancy machines and sophisticated software is the only way to become successful. Obviously, this was not the truth. I wiped out my retirement account to buy the elan-mira writer, a laptop computer (The Toshiba Satellite, had so many problems, there was a class action lawsuit against Toshiba, and had to fix the computers for free for everyone). I have a feeling the salesman representing The Academy of Court Reporting was fully aware of this information, and all the terrible problems caused by it, and bought the computer at a low price, knowing it was flawed, and sold it to me an extremely inflated price as high as he wished. Now I'm stuck with all this fancy equipment, but do not have the proper training or skills required to do the job. I gave up on my dream of becoming a court reporter a couple years ago, because I simply realized that I was scammed by the school, and there was nothing much I could do about it except to attempt to salvage the financial destruction and devastation left behind by these thieves who call themselves educators!
