Androstenedione

Androstenedione (known as "andro") is advertised as promoting muscle growth and strength, and reducing fat.

In March 2004, the FDA warned manufacturers to immediately stop distributing androstenedione-containing products, as the side effects can be severe and permanent, especially when taken by children and adolescents, who wish to emulate sports heros taking the supplement.

Synthetic androstenedione is a steroid precursor, meaning it only turns into a steroid after being absorbed into the body, where it can create feminine effects in boys and men and masculine effects in girls and women. For example, males can experience enlarged breasts and testicular atrophy, and females can experience male pattern baldness, excessive facial hair and deepened voices.

Androstenedione is also alleged to induce premature puberty so that there is early closure of the growth plates of long bones, causing stunted growth. Disruption of normal sexual development, sever acne in girls, excessive body and facial hair, deepening of the voice, permanent enlargement of the clitoris, menstrual cycle disruption, and infertility can all be suffered when injesting Androstenedione.
