ATM Fees Could Violate Antitrust Laws

- by

Santa Clara, CA: ATM fees have come under fire in a recently filed antitrust class action lawsuit against major credit cards and US banks, including Visa and MasterCard. The allegations are that the financial institutions conspired to increase the cost to consumers of ATM fees.

The US Supreme Court recently ruled that the plaintiffs have grounds to move their claims forward, according to an article by Fortune. The justices stated that a lower court was wrong in its determination that consumers had no legal standing for the complaint.

The consumers are alleging that Visa and Mastercard embraced rules that prevented ATM operators from charging a reduced fee for transactions processed through an ATM by a competeing network, thereby protecting themselves from people using cheaper ATM networks to do their transactions.

There are also claims that the banks that hold shares in Visa and MasterCard benefited from the antitrust practices.

So I have a Key Bank account and I went into overdraft. In the next 3-4 day I deposited cash a transfer twice and a pay check into my account. Totally a number of four times to cure it. When I noticed my account was extremely overdrawn I immediately called Key Bank. And my bank told me they consider the negative first,,, before the positive. The racked up over $700. In overdraft fees.
I'm done with Key Bank I can't believe after all these of banking with them this how they would treat a customer...
