Bitter Orange

The FDA has indicated that it is studying the safety of alternatives to the herbal supplement Ephedra, which was banned by the FDA for side effects related to its stimulating effect including heart attack, stroke and death. Suppliers have been quick to promote Bitter Orange as an alternative to Ephedra. It contains the ingredient synerprhine, which results in stimulation very similar to that of Ephedra. Many believe this substance is as dangerous as Ephedra, if not more so.

The FDA states that to date, Bitter Orange has been associated with 7 fatalities and 25 adverse reactions.

Bitter Orange is becoming a common ingredient in many "herbal energy" and weight loss formulas sold over-the-counter in health food stores and pharmacies. Two of the more popular product brand names are Metabolife Ultra and Xenadrine EFX.

When asked, Metabolife declined to answer questions regarding the safety of Bitter Orange in its products, and does not indicate whether the company has conducted any studies regarding their product's safety.

Experts have stated that it is too early to declare Bitter Orange as safe, and because the substance is chemically similar to Ephedra with similar effects, it could pose potentially similar risks as those seen with Ephedra.

Other researchers state that the supplement may cause cancer, liver or kidney failure, cardiac problems or death. Herbal supplements do not require the extensive clinical trials and studies associated with prescription medications.
