Defective Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerators

Whirlpool is having another round of problems another of it's products - this time its Energy Star® Qualified Whirlpool side-by-side counter depth stainless steel refrigerator. Consumers have complained that, as soon as the one-year warranty expires, so does the freezer's capabilities.

Complaints include the following:

  • The freezer's temperature gauge malfunctions (reading 50 degrees Fahrenheit when in fact it is 20 degrees below Fahrenheit).

  • Freezing temperatures cause the water in the drip pan in the back panel to freeze, thereby causing water to puddle at the bottom of the refrigerator and eventually leak onto the floor.

  • Extended Warranty not honored.
Deep Freeze
One customer complained that her refrigerator turned ice-cream into a block that couldn't be scooped for at least 30 minutes. The freezer started running non-stop, and the display showed 50 degrees Farenheit, while the actual temperature was less than 20 degrees.

Extended Warranty
Whirlpool allegedly will not honor its 2-5 year extended warranty for limited internal parts, such as the freezer temperature control. Whirlpool told one disgruntled customer that they would send a technician to look into the problem but the cost wouldn't be covered by the extended warranty.

A customer was told by a Whirlpool technician that her problems were caused by the drip pan being iced-over and that additional parts would be needed. Another technician said a new control board and several other components were required - for a refrigerator not even two years old. In the meantime, she had to melt the ice in the drip pan and scrape ice out of the bottom of the freezer once or twice a week.

I have a Kenmore (made by Whirlpool) side-by-side. It stopped dispensing ice. The technician said the wiring harness to the freezer door is broken, and the whole door must be replaced for $500. I understand this is a common problem. Has Whirlpool issued a recall?

I have a GSS30C6EYY03 side by side and my ice maker just stopped working. I was told after many repair visits that it was the a faulty design in the door. That there is a wire that gets rubbed from opening and closing the door and in order to fix the problem the whole door needs to be replaced. I was also told by another repair man that came to fix my brand new whirlpool microwave where the fan never worked out of the box, that Whirlpool was offering a subsidy for the refrigerator with that design because they were having so many complaints. I called Whirlpool and they said that my refrigerator model number was not on the list. I do also want to mention that when I first got the refrigerator the compressor was bad and they had to give me a new one.

My first Whirlpool fridge rusted badly and was replaced with another Whirlpool fridge. The second fridge started rusting soon after that, and the rust got so bad, the fridge door handle broke off. I was told by local distributor that Whirlpool does not rust-proof the inside of their doors, and so the rusting is from the inside and is beyond the consumer's control.

I have had five drip trays replaced, one door and now the unit turns itself on and off by itself. This $6000 unit is defective, the drip tray design is defective, water does not go uphill. I am an internationally known aerospace engineer and this is a very poor excuse for a design.

Luckily I was home and unplugged it before the house burned down. I would have been launching a suit for a new house. Instead I just need a working fridge soon. My family and I cannot live without a fridge any longer. Whirlpool neglects to call me back with information on what to do and as a result my present life is in complete disarray having no functional kitchen.

The freezer side of the side by side is rusting. We called them about this & got zero help. The ice maker failed 2-3 times. Now the circuit board needs to be replaced @ a cost to us of $250-300. When we called we were offered 15% off a purchase of a new Whirlpool refrigerator.

Had to replace the Ice Maker at under 2 years of age. Had to replace the "Start Device" (old days was a wire wound relay that lasted years, now a thermo resister type compound that cooks from the heat of the compressor). I was told by a tech, by the parts dealer and through on line forum that these parts fail at an amazing rate. The package I purchased to repair, came with 4 options to 4 different compressors used in my model unit.. why?

Greatest loss was time, could not afford to call a repairman and could not afford the loss of food, had to fix myself same day. Self employed, lost day of labor.

The side by side is 6 years old and has had the compressor go out now for the 3rd time. This time they wont do a thing for me. I have lost food 3 times and paid for service calls. No one will even replace the compressor now because they tell me I should junk the refrigerator. It is new in my eyes. I should not have this problem. I paid $1100.00 for something that I would have hoped last more than 6 years. I called Whirlpool and they said "that is too bad, is there anything else we can help you with today" Unbelievable.

I purchased my Whirlpool side by side brand new from Lowes in March of 2005. Model GD5RHAXNB00. The ice maker stopped working about 6 or 7 months ago, the freezer leaks water into the bottom of the freezer. I keep the freezer at its coldest to freeze the water to prevent it from leaking on the floor. If not, it leaks onto the floor. Upon my call to Whirlpool they could not assist me because the product is over a year old. Now I am having problems with the refrigerator keeping cold. I purchased Whirlpool only because consumer guide showed it to be the best on the market, I'd hardly call this the best and didn't think that in 2 1/2 years I'd be looking at having to repair. I think that if you are purchasing something of this value then the warranty on the product should be more than one year and if there is such problems with the ice maker as it appears lots of people are having that Whirlpool should at least repair. I would not expect to have these sorts of problems until the refrigerator is older - much older.

Ice is also freezing around the fan behind the panel, we've also had past problems with the icemaker.
This problem has ruined food, damaged our bottom basket of the freezer trying to get it out. We have had to take the freezer apart several times to remove the back panel because ice has formed around the fan which causes a very loud and annoying sound, especially when it happens in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep and the noise wakes everyone up.

The damages I have suffered are a ruined Kitchen floor and damage to my furnance from water leakage from my kitchen floor which leaked in to my basement into my furnace. I also have been put under a lot of stress while trying to resolve this problem with the store that sold me this refrigerator and their insurance company.
