Class action status has been granted in a lawsuit filed against the Division of Family and Children Services in DeKalb and Fulton counties in Georgia. The suit alleges that the state foster care system allows abused and neglected children to languish for years in the system and seeks an overhaul of the foster care system. The suit further claims that under the current system, there is a failure to work with families to reunite children safely with their parents, or to move children to adoption within a reasonable length of time. The suit was filed in June 2002 on behalf of nine children, and under class action status will be expanded to cover other foster care children.
