Ephedrine is a stimulant that has been used as an ingredient in diet pills, illegal recreational drugs, as well as legitimate over-the-counter medications. It is similar to an amphetamine. Ephedrine, also known as Ma Huang and is derived from the ephedra plant.

In 1995, the FDA released an adverse event report on products containing ephedrine. Reported adverse reaction included:
  • Heart Attack
  • Strokes
  • Paranoid psychosis
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Palpitations
  • Convulsions
  • Coma
Many products containing Ephedra, have been sold to the public without undergoing a safety review by FDA.
