My vehicle was totaled by the insurance company, and I still owed over $9,000 on it. After spending a month driving a rental and negotiating for a suitable settlement from Geico, I received enough money to pay off the lien holder for the truck. However, I still had to buy a new vehicle out of pocket, which set me back monetarily as I am currently employed part time after a layoff, and attending night school. Plus, I was unable to get the same type of vehicle, but instead a substantial step down.
