Chemical company Honeywell International, formerly Allied Chemical Corp., allegedly dumped tons of mercury and polychlorinated byphenols, or PCBs, into the Turtle River over a 23-year period. Its actions allegedly resulted in the disappearance of most marine life in the area and left the water unsuitable for consumption.
The suit further claims that Honeywell conspired with Linden Chemicals and Plastics to keep the dumping quiet. The state Environmental Protection Division and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have confirmed elevated levels of mercury, lead and PCBs at the plant site.
