State of California
April 3 2006
A class action lawsuit filed in Marin County claims that at least 3,200 inmates in California prisons are waiting for parole hearings that are legally past due. California law states that a prisoner is entitled to an annual parole suitability hearing, but some inmates have waited almost two years for a hearing. According in inmates' advocates, the parole board has set re-hearings up to five years without just cause.
The non-profit Prison Law Office represents the inmates.
