Limestone Correctional Facility

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the Limestone Correctional Facility in Alabama on behalf of prisoners who have AIDS or H.I.V. The suit alleges that the plaintiff's living conditions and medical care are a form of cruel and unusual punishment. The state is the only one to completely isolate inmates with H.I.V. or AIDS, who, as a result, are subjected to shoddier health care, a greater risk of communicable diseases and harsher living conditions than other inmates. According to the Justice Department, in 2000 the rate of AIDS-related deaths among Alabama prisoners was more than twice the national prison average.
