Lotronex is a prescription medication that was approved to treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) in women. In 2000 Glaxo Wellcome withdrew the drug from the market due to an increasing number of deaths, surgeries and hospitalizations occuring in people taking this drug.

Symptoms can include severe constipation leading to intestinal obstruction and ruptured bowels, and ischemic colitis.

"A popular drug recently approved for irritable bowel syndrome was pulled from the market yesterday after sending dozens of people to the hospital and possibly causing the deaths of at least three users." [MARC KAUFMAN]

"...the FDA has warned doctors and patients that Lotronex can cause serious side effects including ischemic colitis, a dangerous intestinal inflammation, and severe constipation that has required surgery." [CNN]
