Marion County, IN

A lawsuit has been filed and is seeking class action status against Marion county over property tax hikes. The lawsuit was filed by a new citizens' group, Stop Taxing Our Property, Inc., along with 11 Marion County homeowners. Tax bills have increased sharply recently and plaintiffs are asking for an immediate reassessment of real estate in the county. Some residents of Marion County claim their property taxes have increased by 500%.

The lawsuit was filed with the Marion County Clerk's Office, but has been granted approval to be switched to a court outside the county, due to conflict of interest. Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes admitted that the office, "is not 100% accurate, we do need to do better," and that it has failed to adequately assess commercial and industrial property, therefore putting too great a burden on residential property owners.

Texas’s new Governor ran on a platform of reducing taxes on property. Do you know of anyone who’s taxes have went down? All property owners in Texas needs stand up. And you had better grab your pocket book. The good old boys currently in Austin are coming after more money out of our pockets.

I'm looking to join a class action lawsuit against the way property taxes in Texas counties are being appraised.. I own a house in Galveston Country that I purchased less than two years ago. This year the evaluation of the house when from $46K to $87K in one year.

When I purchase the house I paid $58K, at this time there is no way for me to sell this house for $ 87K. This is not a fair market value for this house. I have protested this valuation and basically told to go to hell. The Governor of Texas has directed us to increase all property values.

This going on all across the state and what’s currently taking place is very dishonest and more than likely criminal. One person I spoke to has the same problem with his only home. When he said the value is wrong and the tax is too high, he was told to sell his home and move into an apartment.

The house I have is used to house care givers for my 96 years old mother that still lives with my wife and I. I has told I need to move them out and rent it out in order to pay the taxes. My taxes doubled on this house double in one year. My next course of action is to take it to court. I’m currently awaiting my rejection letter from Galveston county.

What needs to happen is a class action sue of serval thousand people together. Finding a way of changing the way the fair market value is being arrived at by each county.

We purchased our home in Collingswood (Camden Co, NJ) in 1998 and our property tax was roughly $1800 a year and has been raised every year by nearly $1000 and is now over $7000 a year without justification or reason. Another asessment is coming shortly and they are even asessing the inside of our homes now. We are even being taxed for what is referred to as "Open Air Taxes" for the space between our home and the neighbors as well. However, there have not been major significant tax raises to commercial property in the county nor on businesses at the same rate as residential property. Also, we are not allowed to park on the street in front of our home and are not allowed a parking permit either as the street is commercial property and but yet the sidewalk is residential and our responsability too. Yet we are constantly ticketed for it.
