Newmont Mining Company, Peru

A class action lawsuit has been filed in the United States against Newmont Mining Company, the owner of Minera Yanacocha which is Latin America's largest gold producer. The suit was filed on behalf of 1,100 residents of a farming village in northern Peru where 332 pounds of mercury spilled from a truck subcontracted by Newmont in June 2000. The residents, unaware of the dangers, collected the mercury and took it home, leading to symptoms of acute mercury poisoning, from blindness to brain damage, cardiovascular defects, physiologic deformities and lesser ailments.
