A class action suit has been filed on behalf of 1,200 families from the San Martin, Gilroy and Morgan Hill areas in California who have ingested potassium perchlorate, an industrial oxidizer in their drinking water. The perchlorates leached into the underground aquifer, and into many private wells, from a former Olin Corp. plant extending at least seven miles south into an area north of the Gilroy city limits.

Perchlorate interferes with iodine uptake by the thyroid, and is especially harmful to pregnant women and infants and can interfere with neurological development in unborn. Some studies associate it with thyroid cancer.
