Class action status will be sought for a lawsuit to be filed against several South African gold companies, including AngloGold, Anglo American, Gold Fields and Harmony, on behalf of miners suffering from lung diseases silicosis and pthysis. Silicosis, a debilitating and even fatal respiratory disease, is caused by inhalation of excessive levels of dust arising from mining operations. These operations have caused widespread injury and devastation across South Africa, and the adverse effects associated with silica have been made aware to the companies for more than 100 years. The suit would allege that both the asbestos mining industries appear to have displayed a flagrant disregard and cavalier attitude to the health of their workers, placing profit as the clear priority.
