Six Flags Great America

Hurricane Harbor, the water park at Six Flags remained shut down over the weekend after the Illinois Department of Public Health announced that four people had become sick after visiting the park. The parasite Cryptosporidium was implicated in the illness of two Wisconsin youth, while the remaining two are awaiting test results. Cryptosporidium is a waterborne parasite and causes the disease cryptosporidiosis, which presents as diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever. These symptoms appear after the parasite is ingested and incubated for seven days.

We attended Hurricane Harbor and my 4 year old swam there. The following Wednesday (8/15), she was admitted to the Emergency Room of Swedish Covenant Hospital with severe stomach cramps and fever. This lasted on and off for a week at least. While there, she had to endure a CT scan and much bloodwork which terrified her (and us).

Copy of letter sent to Six Flags

June 29, 2007

Dear Mr --- and Mr ---;

Thank you for allowing me to return to your park for another attempt at a fun filled day. I regret that my visit was again unsatisfactory and also I became sick after my visit on June 26, 2007, please allow me to elaborate on this most unpleasant experience.

When I arrived at your park by mid noon I was in top form, I parked my car and walked toward the entrance with my book bag filled with swimming shorts and fresh dry socks and sandals. As I walked toward the entrance I was met with a long metal winding fence that took me deep to the left for about 2 city blocks. I could not scale it or I would have, I saw no purpose for this barrier. By the time I was at the front gate I was then turned around to another area to get approved to enter.

This process took another 10 mins, while she took a picture of my driver license.

At last I was in and on my way to the water park, this time even though it was mid week I was prepared for lines and attractions that may be shut down, but I am sorry to say this letter is not about those issues, this letter is about public health.

Right now if you walk out of your office, provided you’re at the park at 525 north RT 21
If you walk up to the water fountains by the bathrooms right in the front of the park where you enter, walk over to all of the water fountains and look at condition of them.
The nozzle where the water comes out is caked with BLACK mold and debris.

Needless to say as of the writing of this letter I am sick- mainly because I was foolish enough to drink from this cooler and also I breath in the mist from free standing mist machines as well as over head units…one mister in southwest territory was blowing mist down, and only ONE vent was working the rest were broken down and caked with lime scale.

I’m sure Coca Cola would be gravely disappointed to see a cooling station in this condition with their name on it. By the way…. just to back up what I have said I took close up pictures and long shot images.

By the time I left the park I was sick, when I got home I was very sick- I developed a fever of 101 degrees and was sweating terribly – by 1am I was in ricers (violent shaking) I threw up, and have loose stools. Furthermore what is coming out of my sinus is indescribable so there for I will not burden you with any more details.

I was to travel on this day June 29, 2007 and due to my condition I can not.

I am astonished that this can happen at a world class park. !

In addition I have no idea if your pool was up to standards with fecal contamination in the parts per million. All I know is its day 3 now and I’m sick!

I ate the following food:

2 corn dogs and 2 cokes, total came out to $19.50, needless to say I was shocked by the dollar amount.

My locker was $9.00 and the water park was so confusing to use that I’m lucky that I did not get a $12.00 one, not one person had a correct answer for me, on the use or protocol for using them. So much for client services.

This I may add is the termination of my association with this park.
My last visit was just as awful and all I received was a comp ticket and parking, when really I wanted a refund.

My current visit has resulted in dirty environments that have made me ill.

NO MORE COMP anything please …..

My return to your park cost more than anything you could compensate me for

My health is damaged!

A full refund for parking and full admission would be appreciated and fair under the circumstances.

My return to your park cost; $79.00 for the antibiotic called ZITROMAX that I currently taking- $22.00 to drive to your park, $19.50 for food ( over charged) and a taffy apple that had no flavor $5.00, that I tossed out, 2 sno cones both melted off a cart for 4.00 per item, that had no flavor, just melting chucks of blue ice in a cup with a spoon.
(Please stop that practice now!!!)

And so on and so on……

Now please do the right thing, and refund my admission and parking like I wanted back in October of last year….please.

And get up…and walk out to those water fountains RIGHT NOW and take a tooth brush with you and a team of workers with bleach and get up to speed.

Sincerely,

xxxx
