Whirlpool Faces Defective Dishwasher Class Action

- by

Washington, DC: A defective products class action lawsuit has been filed against Whirlpool, the manufacturer of Kitchenaid, Sears Kenmore, Maytag and Whirlpool dishwashers, alleging that certain models of dishwashers have a design flaw that can cause the control circuit board to fail. Greg Adams, who filed the suit, alleges this happened to him.

Adams claims that on December 8, 2011, he started his dishwasher only to smell burning plastic and see smoke coming from his dishwasher, sometime shortly afterward. To stop the dishwasher, he tried to pull on the door handle, but said he burned his hand on the front panel, which had become extremely hot. In the end, Adams was forced to shut the power off, to prevent prevent further catastrophe, and protect his family.

According to NBCnews.com, research suggests more than 600 people across the country have come forward on kitchenaid.com. Their products were manufactured by whirlpool, which produces Kitchenaid, Sears Kenmore, Maytag and Whirlpool dishwashers.

Chuck Fax, the lawyer representing Adams, wants Whirlpool to issue a recall to correct the alleged design defect. He filed the class action lawsuit with 13 names including Greg Adams.

My daughter approx. 7 years ago bought me a Kitchenaid dishwasher. The control panel burned out sparks smoke everywhere. I had at least 5 yrs of service left on that. I called whirlpool, gracious enough to send repair man at their cost. Totally burned out couldnt be fixed. Thought whirlpool was the greatest appliance company will never buy any appliances from them again.

I purchased a Maytag MDB8959SBS1 in 2013 and within 4 years, the control panel had to be replace under the extended warranty we purchased. Now, just three more years later, the control panel isn't working again. Is there any new legal action in these cases?

CAUTION, A WHIRLPOOL product started the deadly June 14, 2017 London block inferno, 79 people perished in the flames!

Purchased this Whirlpool made Maytag Stainless Steel dishwasher Feb 2013. By Jan 2017 the washer was no longer operational. Due to poor factory design the touch pad wiring harness was crushed during the initial assembly. The harness is routed behind the touch pad/pull handle faceplate in the door. The factory design provided no clearance for the harness. Obviously after little use (opening and closing of the door) the pinched portion of the harness behind the pull handle becomes compromised causing an ELECTRICAL SHORT.

I phoned Whirlpool the maker of the Maytag Stainless Steel Dishwasher for assistance, all they offered was a "repair plan" in excess of $300.00. I purchased this supposedly quality American Made Whirlpool product as well as a range, microwave, washer and dryer in the spirit of supporting US labor. Now I'm stuck with a dishwasher that has an ELECTRICAL SHORT, possibly a FIRE HAZARD and Whirlpool trying to milk me for more money. Please think twice before purchasing anything from this Michigan based company.

Whirlpool dishwasher does not work. The dishwasher is full off steam and moister. The lights on the front control panel are displayed, but nothing works. I believe our dishwasher is less than 2 years old.

Sears Kenmore Elite Dishwasher ~$950 (Whirlpool) purchased in 2011 for our getaway condo. Mostly unoccupied year round. t.On the third control panel (w10541456). The original board failed in 4 years with severe corrosion on areas were no silicon conformal coating over circuit board traces. Unknow as to backside of board. Replaced board which worked for 4 years. Now failed again. New panel w10195191 installed. Obvious defective conformal coating process. Whirlpool's circuit board assembler is not coating the entire board to protect it from humidity and moisture. This board should be sealed from the door or fully coated to protect it. Very disappointing.

Our Maytag MDB7749AWM was used no more than 100 times (the house was vacant most times) and it won't start now. The issue is exactly as described by some online discussion--failed front panel. It is almost a new unit so would be such a waste to replace it, but spending more than $200 to have it replaced and then risk it fail again seems a worse option. Maytag obviously knows the problem and why don't they fix it?

My mother has a Kenmore Elite Dishwasher, model # 66512772K310, it has leaked twice and ruined her kitchen floor, it has been documented by Dishwasher Repair Technicians that this was the case. Whirlpool's "legal team" wants to settle for a fraction of what the estimated cost is to repair my 84yr old mothers kitchen floor....think twice before purchasing a Whirlpool!

Purchased MDB7749AWW Maytag dishwasher. It failed within the first 6 months, control panel. Experienced two more control panel failures, the last one being December, 2015, when all control settings lights lit up, but dishwasher was absolutely dead. I then resumed the old fashioned washing dishes by hand, due to extreme frustration. Maytag appliances have previously and always, excelled in performance. Very disappointed, will never buy another Maytag appliance. Consumers deserve a fair and honest compensation for this extremely poor appliance design.

Purchased Maytag dishwasher MDB7749SBQ3 from Brandsmart on 12/6/2013. The light buttons are usually not working to the touch, need to digitally hit the select and start buttons several times places for it to activate. This was true for the original control panel and the replacement.
The original failed after 3 years due to the faulty latch design. Opening the door places extreme torque to the sides of the plastic control panel. The panel is held in place by screws and plastic tabs. One or both tabs on the sides will eventually snap off and the panel will not stay in place. Opening the door will result in the panel out of place needing to manually pop it back. It will however not go to its original position, but sticks out.
I replaces it by purchasing a panel online, after a lot of searching because of the hard to find :Bisque" color. This replacement panel lasted 5 months, failing with the plastic tab breaking in the same right side, as the original. I and my wife opened and closed the door delicately, knowing what mickey mouse design was at work.
I also purchased for the "Maytag" name and feel betrayed.

We bought maytag model # MSN 7759 AWW3 n the summer of 2009. We started to smell electrical and or plastic burning December 2016. Called customer service and asked why there is not a recall on this. The only solution they had for me was to sell us a New Control Board for $700. I don't think so. Especially knowing it will need replaced in a year or 2. They need to stand behind their products. I didn't spend $700 for the Dishwasher to pay $700 including labor to replace the board when the burning issue would occur again. Thank God when we bought this Dishwasher that we would never leave while it was running!!

We bought maytag model # MDB7749SBMO in the summer of 2013. My husband replaced the control panel once and not even a year after replacing that one the second one is garbage. Called customer service and asked why there is not a recall on this. The only solution they had for me was to sell me a new one at a discounted price. ( which I found is only $100 off the price online) or spend 300+ on a repair and 1 year warranty! I don't think so. Especially knowing it will need replaced in a year or 2. They need to stand behind their products. I didn't spend $700 to replace the parts every year!

Same problem as every one else...control panel problems MDB7749SBM2. Was purchased in July of 2013 and this year (2016) around the same time the control panel stopped working properly. Not sure why there is not a recall on this item. Why is Whirlpool allowed to continue producing and selling this s!@$t! The fleecing of America, so sad

1.5 year old Maytag dishwasher requires replacement of Main Control Board due to corrosion.

The dishwasher suddenly stopped working after 1.5 years. Although the wash features light up on the control panel, the Start button does not function and the unit will not turn on.

Three failed boards on our Maytag dishwasher. Every time they sold us a replacement, they expressed surprise that we had a problem. They claimed to be unaware of the issue!

Purchased Maytag dishwasher Dec 2011 from Lowe's and have had to replace control panel three times. Now the water is not draining and the control panel is not working. How much more money do I need to put into this piece of garbage?

Maytag dishwasher is 5 years old. The circuit board failed. Repair costs are too great so I need to buy a new dishwasher. What has happened to the quality of the products we buy. My first maytag was great lasting 12 years. The second lasted less than 3 years while this one made it to 5. What a racket they have going.

Purchased this Maytag in February 2015, its now November 5th 2015. The control board went completely out.
cost of repairs and having someone else to do it is not worth it. You can buy a brand new dishwasher for the cost. We as consumers work hard for our money and trust others to do the right thing. Maytag doesn't want to do that. I wish I would have read about them before I purchased one. Again as consumers we put our trust and hard earned money into a billion dollar company. Please stop this before machine actually hurts someone.

Purchased Maytag dishwasher in August of 2013. Today I needed to have the circuit board replaced because the steam from the drying cycle caused corrosion. The cost was $251.00. This was due to a defect in the design and I do not feel I should have had to pay for this problem. Keep in mind that in 2014 and 2015, this dishwasher was not used for 5 month of the each year. I want Maytag to pay me back for this repair. What happened to the Maytag products we use to be able to depend on? I will not be buying Maytag products again unless they improve their products.
