In November 2000, a class action lawsuit was filed against subsidiary First Horizon Home Loans in Jackson County, MO. The lawsuit claimed First Horizon or an acquired company, McQuire Mortgage, charged certain loan origination fees that were permitted under Kansas and federal law but were not permitted by Missouri law. First Horizon officials denied any guilt and said they agreed to settle the class action for $21 million to avoid risks and end the ongoing expense associated with this protracted litigation.
