A class action lawsuit was filed in 1999 against the department on behalf of 55 former inmates. The class claimed during the tenure of former Sheriff Richard Rouse, officers at Suffolk County correctional facilities routinely beat inmates and treated them improperly. The settlement paid $175,000 in attorney fees and initiated changes that address these concerns. (May-11-05)
