Arthur's Seat Chairlift

In January 2003, 18 people suffered head, neck, and spinal injuries when a pylon collapsed on the Mornington Peninsula chairlift ride. Faulty design and installation of the structure caused water to pool around the base of the pylon plates. Poor construction and inadequate maintenance resulted in corrosion and metal fatigue in pylon anchor bolts. Chairlift operator Richard Hudson spent $500,000 on repairs after its collapse and reopened the popular ride in January 2004. Fifteen people injured in the collapse filed a class action lawsuit against the operator of Victoria's Arthur's Seat Chairlift and were awarded a confidential financial personal injury settlement.
