Baby Formula Recalled Due to Potential Presence of Common Beetle

- by

Sturgis, MIThe beloved four-wheeled star of several Walt Disney movies might be mortified at the news that upwards of five million cans of Similac powdered baby formula have been recalled due to the possible presence of a beetle.

It was revealed on 9/22/10 that Abbott Laboratories has recalled millions of cans of the powdered infant formula Similac after a small common beetle was detected in the Similac produced at a facility in Sturgis, Michigan.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has said if an infant were to ingest the beetle, it could irritate the gastrointestinal tract and cause the infant to lose appetite, not to mention the potential for accompanying discomfort.

According to CNNMoney.com, the recall includes certain Similac powder product lines that come in 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce, and 12.9-ounce cans.

Abbott liquid formula is not a part of the recall.

When the presence of the beetle was discovered, Abbott halted both the manufacturing and shipping of the product from that facility and immediately informed the FDA. CNN reported that the affected plant was being fumigated, a process which started Wednesday and would take about three days to complete.

There was no word on when the plant would be back up and running.

The recall is being issued in the US, Puerto Rico, Guam and some countries in the Caribbean.
