A lawsuit has been filed against the current owners of American National Can Co., Rexam PLC of London, on behalf of former employees of the company who are challenging the cuts in their retirement benefits. The suit is seeking class action status, and claims that the company guaranteed it would provide lifetime health benefits without cost to retirees and surviving spouses. The suit further alleges that the company has reduced retiree benefits, although this is in violation of labor agreements and U.S. labor and pension laws, and the company has also stated that it may further reduce or eliminate benefits at any time.
