A lawsuit has been filed against Best Buy Inc. and Microsoft Corp. in Los Angeles and is seeking class action status. The suit alleges that the two companies conspired to charge customers for services when they had not agreed to pay for those services. The suit claims that Best Buy was running a promotion where customers would receive a free compact disc which would allow them to try Microsoft's MSN service when they paid for their purchases using credit or debit cards. Best Buy would scan the compact disc before giving it to the customer and all of the customer's information from the debit or credit card would then be send from the store to Microsoft without the customer's knowledge. The suit contends that Microsoft then used this banking information to activate an MSN service account, and to deduct a monthly service charge from the customer's account, even if the customer had not used the free CD, or the MSN account.
