Several class action lawsuits have been launched on behalf of victims and their families against Epitome Nightclub in Chicago where 21 people died in a stampede on Feb 17, 2003.

The nightclub had a history of problems, including:
  • The club has its liquor license suspended for five days in January after being caught serving alcohol to a minor.
  • Since 2000, police have responded to 80 calls at the club, one of which involved the shooting death of a man 13 months ago.
  • The club has been cited since last April by City inspectors for building and fire code violations, including inadequate exits. When the owners failed to address the violations, a city housing court judge ordered the club vacated, an order that was in effect the night of the tragedy. The city of Chicago may also be named in the suit .
