Gateway, Inc.
December 20 2005
A group of consumers have filed a nationwide class action lawsuit in the United States District Court for Southern District of California against the computer giant for allegedly violating the California Consumer's Legal Remedies Act and the Song-Beverly Consumer Warranty Act through its manufacturing, distribution and sales of GTW Series Plasma Television sets. The class claimed they experienced total failure of their plasma television sets within a short time after purchase.

Well I guess I'm a day late and about $3500 short. I didn't even know about this lawsuit. I purchase a 47 inch plasma TV from Gateway in 2003. In 2008, with no warning, the TV just stopped working. And never worked again. It was like someone cut it off and it wouldn't turn on again. I couldn't stand to throw it away because it felt like throwing money away. My husband had wanted it and we got it (me, reluctantly because I couldn't see spending that much money on a TV) and then he passed away a few months later. I still had to make payments on the dang thing and I still have the TV in a closet.

I purchased the computer in 2003 (I think). I bought an extended warranty which I used on more than five occassions to have the television repaired and finally replaced. Even the replacement television stopped working. The warranty has expired and the television does not work. I now own a non-functional television that I believe I purchased for approximately $4,900.00.

Right after my additional 3 year warranty expired the TV failed, POOF, no image no sound. I called Gateway and they told me there are no Gateway authorized repair centers where to take the plasma, and that I cannot purchase parts to replace them. That I should go to a third party and get it fixed, since there is no more warranty to get it serviced, repaired, etc.
I'm left with a $4000 TV that is supposed to last in average 12 years plus and it stopped working in 3 years, not even a regular bulb TV lasts this short.

My 42" television will no longer display an image or project any sound from the speakers, and it is only 3 years old. The power light turns green when the power button is pushed, but no image or sound comes from the television. When called, Gateway offered no possible explanation for the problem, only an $1100 "out of waranty repair option," and no prediction of how long the repair might take.

The TV two days ago developed a blue non responsive screen that could be reset by unplugging, but a day later the TV went totally dark when turned on and has no picture. We had an extended warranty that ended 6 months ago, as we are 3.5 years from purchase. When I called I was told it would cost $500 to have technician come to my house. The part that was necessary was most likely the logic board and would cost an additional $450, but it may be as much as $700. The TV cost $5600 with warranties and appears to have be designed to disintegrate right at the time of warranty end. Of particular concern was that we do not watch that TV except when company is over. Our RCA TV from 1980 is still functioning and this one did not last 4 years. They should be out of business for selling known defective products. I say that because most times when you buy something good, when the warranty comes up they ask if you wish to renew. For this one they were waiting for those stupid enough to get it fixed to pay more than it was worth the second time around.

We purchased our television from Gateway back in 2005 for roughly $1,700. A few months ago, the television blew up while we were watching it. There was a quick spark when it blew up and a loud noise. The sound still works but no picture will display on the set any longer. We have contacted Gateway's coroporate offices but were granted no resolution. They advised that the cost is $700 for them to send someone over to the house and attempt to repair the television. Unfortunately, there is no guarantee that the television can be fixed.

I bought my 42 inch Gateway plasma TV 3 years ago. Even though I hardly watched it, about 2 years ago one thick black line appeared on the screen. I now have three thick black
lines. I spent almost $3000 for a TV that barely worked right for a year. These TSs are clearly defective. I feel I deserve compensation. Gateway should not be able to get away with this.
