LG Faces Class Action Over Defective LCD and Plasma TVs

- by

Oklahoma City, OK: A federal class action lawsuit has been filed againt LG Electronics USA, alleging that the electronics manufacturer's plasma and LCD Television sets are defective, impacting the lifespan of the Televisions.

The lawsuit is brought by the plaintiff on behalf of himself and anyone else who purchased certain defective LG Televisions in the state of Nevada. Class televisions include but are not limited to models 32LC2D, 37LC2D, 42LC2D, 42PC3D, 42PC3DV, 47LC7DF and 50PC3D.

The lawsuit alleges that the Televisions are defective in that they contain internal components called printed wiring boards (also known as printed circuit boards) that prematurely fail during normal operation of the Televisions (the "Defect"). The Defect, which was present upon delivery and which manifests itself over time, ultimately results in the failure of the Televisions themselves well before the end of their expected useful life, and rendering the Televisions unsuitable for their principal and intended purpose.

I have a LG tv which I purchased several years ago, from around 6 months it started turning its self on and off frequently, the problem can stop for a couple of weeks the. It starts again. I would never purchase an LG tv again.

I purchased a LG 47LN5400 in August of 2013. In March of 2016, picture went black. I had not purchased extended warranty from Best Buy. I called LG about the issue. LG repaired the TV as a one time courtesy. The LED strips were replaced on one-half of TV. Well, about 3 MONTHS later, the same thing happened again, no picture. The contractor that did the work repaired TV again, no charge to me. That repair work lasted from 2016 until 2019, picture went out. LG advised out of warranty and nothing they can do about it. I agree with others that a class action lawsuit should be brought against LG. It appears LG is using inferior strips, knowing they won’t last long, and are outside the warranty period.

It a shame that LG is taking advantage of customers. When you purchase an LG TV, you would expect it to last longer than 3 years.

Spent many, many hours being shoved around by LG re. my 2017 55 curved oled. Under an extended warranty and they LG had AIG send repairman to assess the issue. He said he sees it all the time. They call it burn-in.
They do not cover for burn-in as it is in the fine print. It seems like this is a big problem for them and the repairman called it a manufacturing defect.
Are there class action law suits currently in motion?
Thanks

Only used it for a couple years when one day it made a loud noise and turned black. We managed to get it back on for an hour only for it to make the same noise and die again. Can turn it on/off but nothing appears on the screen.

While it’s unlikely that LG will ever face any punishment for this clear defect in their products, it’s good to know that others hate this bullshit company.

What’s particularly frustrating is that they’re definitely aware that they x#$%ed up and they’ve pretty successfully swept it under the rug. I would love to see this company get its head chopped off.

Bought 65 inch OLED, curved screen, two years ago. Over the last few months, center of screen has green tint. Right side of screen is normal. Also have bad burn in, I lower left corner. This TV was very expensive, am thoroughly disgusted. Obviously beyond LG 1 yr warranty. Will never buy anything from LG again !,,,

LG 55UJ6200 AU bought at Walmart less than a year ago, took it to our secondary place of residence in South America to replace a smaller Vizio in our living room, out of the box, connected it and watched TV until 11 pm, suddenly, no image at all, next morning I it looked into it and found one HDMI port with burn marks (Have a Trip Lite in-line protector for all our electronics plus a delay voltage fluctuation disconnect device on all TV, no storms or loss of power at all that evening.

NO chance to claim warranty, or return the TV, so paid a local technician to replace the bad board and got the TV to work again, less than 9 months gone by when yesterday it suddenly started to show one thick horizontal band with flickering and color changes on the bottom 3/4 of the screen, totally unrelated to the first occurrence! .

I am at witt's end with this TV, beautiful when it works but it's unreliable junk, had the Vizio for over 3 years and two Toshiba 40' LCDs for 8 years at the same location, all still going strong, would not buy another LG product if they were the last manufacturer left on the face of the earth!,

I purchased a LG 55LG6000 tv and its about 4 years old. The tv just started going off and on for no apparent reason. It will cost as much as a new one get it fix. I got a factory warranty and paid for an extended warranty from LG. I contacted them and they had no record of the warranty or me ever registering the TV.

LG tv. Was gift from my job. After just a year screen just turns on and off. I see now this is a common issue. I have no receipt so I guess I have no way of returning or doing anything but hoping someone will fix.

My LG TV started turning on and off by itself. Of course it's out of warranty. LG just sent me 2 places that could possibly fix it. But they informed me that it could cost just as much as buying a new one! LG should definitely be held accountable! Had the same issue with an LG phone as well. I will never buy anymore LG products!

I bought an LG 47" LED 47LN5750 only 5 years ago from Sam's Club. I purchased the Sam's Club 3 year warranty. Just one month shy of the warranty being expired, the back light went out. Same symptoms as everyone else; black screen but has sound and the LG logo flashes for a second when the TV is turned on. Sam's Club sent someone to repair it and replaced the back light inverter all under warranty, so no charge. Now, 2 years later the same thing just happened. Of course not under warranty. A TV should last more than 5 years, especially with it already being repaired once. Disappointed with the LG brand. I will not buy anything LG again.

Purchased an LG HD 55" OLED TV 1.5 years ago. I have glaucoma and it's superb resolution, blacks and colors help me see better then LED's or Plasmas. However after 1.5 years of use the LG has a terrible problem with burn in. The Set/Technology retains ghost images of static picture segments on virtually every major network. Those crawls or logos on the screen burn in and remain annoyingly visible. LG has a setting which they claim reduces burn in potential but I've found it useless as is their built in program they recommend you run periodically to clean up the screen "noise".

LG does not warrant against burn in even though it can't be avoided with normal viewing.

LG TV, was not used the first 4 years after purchase witing for new home. Screen flashes and remains black for the most part. Started using in Spring of 2016, and rarely ever used. So frustrating as paid over $500 at the time... but you would expect it to last more than 2 years... I have had a 60 Sony TV purchased in 2005, and it is working perfectly to this day. I am going to contact LG for replacement product, will pursue legal action if LG does not do the right thing here!!

LG65Uk63 UHD TV purchased in July 2018, ceased working three months later - sound but no picture. One year warranty has not been honored despite numerous calls to corporate and escalation 'up the ladder' as indicated in so many stories here. Two repair service companies report One of the two required parts is simply not available - no estimated time of availability - not even a back-order situation. LG personnel were repeatedly dishonest on the phone, as witnessed by Target Corp. staff who sat in on one call. January 2019, we are 6 months from purchase, three months without a functioning unit and no end in sight.

I purchased an LG 49UB 8500 in April 2014. One year later I had problems with it turning on, and when it did it went from red to Green to black, red to Green to Black and that was all it would do. it was still under warranty so LG paid to have it repaired it was over $300. 8 months later it did it again and it wasn't under warranty. I paid myself 300 some dollars do you have it repaired and now it's doing it again and LG will do nothing about it. I would like to know what I can do about it if anything. all the comments I read from everybody there's so many of them. It seems like the consumer should be able to do something without having to pay an attorney 10 times what the TV is worth.

Our LG TV model 49UF6400 is barely two years old and the left side of the screen has a blue tint. LG service won’t grant me a one time courtesy repair. The repair will cost me nearly $600. This is unacceptable. I am willing to join in a class action lawsuit against LG.

I received a LG 50LN5100 for Christmas from my kids 1 1/2 yrs ago screen just went black. I sent a complaint in and I received a nice form letter of the strive for quality products and customer service but looking at these reviews that is not the case. They tried to give me a service call number that may cost $150-$250 or more. It seems that the led strips are crap. I am going to repair myself as who can afford to buy another tv and if I do it won't be a LG.

I agree that LG TV's have an awesome picture and sound. But apparently the company does not stand behind its product. I bought a beautiful 4k in November of 2016 and as of yesterday, its $900. worth of junk. I read the complaints of the same issue over and over again online. I really thought I was buying a product of quality. But apparently they are pretty much all garbage. I am so ashamed of the company I thought so highly of. Never again. And I will warn everyone I know, to stay away from LG TVs. I agree, law suit.... How many people are getting ripped off. Then they want you to buy an out of warranty, warranty. Wonder how much they ding you for that another $500. NEVER Again....

Purchased 60 inch UHD LG TV. (60LB7100) Main board failed in 2015 and now again TV has gone to sound without picture. Lighting issue as there is an image behind that seems to not be illuminated. Purchase was $1500.00 and I don't expect a TV that costs that much to fail twice in a 4 year span of time. Would like some compensation for the repair and have now learned that this is a reoccurring issue with LG Televisions.

Bought my lg55lf6000 in December of 2015. It worked great for 2-1/2 years. One day the picture started going blank and flickering every second. Looked on line and found that it’s a common problem for this tv between 2-3 years. Called lg and they said there is nothing they can do with there faulty product since I didn’t buy an extended warranty.

I purchased an LG 65SJ9500 65-Inch 4K Ultra HD Smart LED TV (2017 Model) in November and received it in early December. After 2.5 months, the picture went out but still had sound. We contacted LG, and after about 1 month of consumer “service” nightmare, finally got a contracted repair person to replace two parts. The parts replacements were unsuccessful and the TV was deemed unrepairable by the contractor. He recommended replacement to LG. Another month ha gone by and LG has sent a second contractor out. It has been 12 days since he ordered parts and we were told it would take 3. Today, the contractor called and said that the parts house informed him that I (consumer) had cancelled the order. I have have no personal knowledge of where the parts center is, nor do I care to cancel the part for my TV. LG is not upholding our consumer warranty, and have outright disrespected us. How does a consumer fight a giant corporation that will not comply with their end of a deal? At this point, we are demanding replacement but I am sure that the disrespect for our consumer rights will continue.

The USB port supplying power to the digital to analog audio converter going on off clicking. The HDMI 1 port Signaling an active device ON redundantly bouncing up and down endlessly. UGH. When it wont turn on I have to unplug and re-plug into an outlet to Reboot power switch , still with the same issues. It has around 5800 hours on the set. Now it needs about a $400 repair. A power supply board or a Sub-power supply board I believe should be RECALLED for such sudden failure. LG may be called LOUSY GOODS !

Was given an LG TV as a gift sat in box for awhile. Then tried to hook it up. worked for 6 months than started having trouble turning off and on. Now it won't work at all. Red light turns on but i have no functions and if I push power red light turns off and TV is completely dead. I have checked capacitors and none seem to be damaged. I have done some research and I believe my main control board or the green board if you are just looking inside your TV is not working. told its between a hundred to two hundred dollars for a new board. Kind of think that thats bullshit that a 42 inch TV only lasts six months and than has a major board stop working. Will never buy an LG TV and will recommend to everyone I know never to buy one.

My 47" LG Flat Screen is doing the same thing as all of these other comments describe. Black screen, no sound and very sudden at approximately 3 years old. I thought I was buying a quality product that was going to last me for awhile. I don't have a lot of money and can neither afford to repair or replace this TV right now. Purchased a LG 50LN5400 in April 2014. Manufacture date was January 2014. The picture just went out 06-12-17. My local service technician advised me that the backlight is out. The problem is from the main power supply board that is running too hot and that a modification would have to be made to the power supply board when replacing the back lights. This information came from service notes regarding common problems with LG TV's. Bottom line was that it was not worth the cost of repair ($525 labor and materials) compared to the price of buying a new TV. I WILL NOT PURCHASE ANOTHER LG PRODUCT.

I purchased an LG 50 inch smart TV in 2013. Early 2016 it decided to stop working. Powers on, then flashes off. No sound no picture. I found out that it was a defective Panel. I purchased an LG out of warranty plan only to find out that The plan would not fully cover the cost of repair.. LG requested additional $400. I immediately canceled the warranty and I will not purchase another LG product. It is sad that something so costly would stop working so soon. Around 28 month old LG 47LN5750 tv went black but you can almost make out shapes and clearly here the sound on it. Changed out the HDMI cord and still same issue. Changed input ports still same issue. After reading online it appears LG is only in the business of screwing over the consumer. Sad that there is no class action lawsuit against them. Ours is an LG 60' Plasma Svc Code 60PN5300 which turns itself off every 20 to 30 minutes. Only about a year and a half old. LG.Com states this model is now discontinued. Warranty over just soon after it was paid for. What a rip off. There needs to be some type of class action suit for these models or some type of replacement compensation. I guess the BBB is the best way to go right now although not sure how much good that will do.

My 47LN5200 LG TV is less than 2 years old. We noticed a flickering in the bottom center of the screen a few weeks ago. The screen would become bright then dim in just one area. Today the screen went black. The sound works but no video. I've looked online and this seems to be a common problem. Is there anyway to get it replaced or be compensated?

My LG 47LN5700 failed after 18 months. One of the backlight LED's burnned up resulting in a black screen, but it still had sound. LG was no help at all. These TV's are defective and I want my money back.

My 20 month old LG 47LN5200 lost picture, completely. No help from LG...they said it was past warranty. It was well taken care of and should have lasted more than 20 months.
