Minneapolis, MN

A class action lawsuit has been filed against the city alleging racial discrimination against police officers of color. The suit claims several Police Lieutenants and Sergeants presented their racial concerns to Civil Rights Director Michael Jordan, which were then leaked to Minneapolis Police Chief Tim Dolan. The African American officers were subsequently retaliated against and demoted.

The class action claims the city of Minneapolis has held a consistent pattern of discrimination against African American officers and other officers of color over the last 20 years. The lawsuit also alleges obstructive actions of the Minneapolis Civil Rights Department. The Black Police Officers Association filed the lawsuit on behalf of current and former police officers of the Minneapolis Police force who have been discriminated against based on race. The suit claims long standing departmental racism, magnified by the demotions of key black cops within the last year. It also alleges discrimination against lieutenants and sergeants who faced disciplinary action for personnel violations.
