Class action status has been granted in a lawsuit filed against the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service, which has since been blended into the new Department of Homeland Security, on behalf of as many as 2,742 Somalis who are in danger of being deported from the United States. The suit was filed by five Seattle-area Somali men who the government is attempting to deport to the war-torn East African country. The government argues that they may remove aliens to their country of birth without qualifications, even if the country is in chaos, wracked by civil war, and lacks a functioning government to accept the deportee.
