A class action lawsuit has been filed against the province of British Columbia, the city of Vancouver and the Vancouver police board on behalf of anyone strip searched after December 6, 2001 at the Vancouver jail. The suit alleges that the Vancouver police routinely conduct strip searches of those who are arrested, although it is contrary to a Supreme Court of Canada decision which states that strip searches violate the charter of rights. The suit further alleges that the searches are "unlawful and constitute assault, battery and breaches of the civil rights and liberties of the plaintiffs and other class members." The suit claims that the searches are humiliating, demeaning, degrading and abusive.
