Loblaw Cos. Ltd. et al.

A lawsuit has been filed against some of Canada's largest supermarket chains claiming grocery workers' pension plans have lost more than $1 billion due to trustee negligence. The defendants include Loblaw Cos. Ltd., George Weston Ltd., the Great Atlantic & Pacific Co., Sobeys Inc., Metro Richelieu, and Kraft Canada Inc. The lawsuit was filed in Ontario Superior Court of Justice and seeks class action status for nearly 300,000 beneficiaries of the Canadian Commercial Workers Industry Pension Plan. The lawsuit claims the plan's trustees breached responsibilities to workers and retirees by mismanaging hundreds of millions of dollars, violating provisions of Ontario's Pension Benefits Act, and ignoring their own internal policies.
