United Steel Workers of America

A group of union members has filed a class action lawsuit against United Steel Workers of America alleging they were promised health benefits at no cost when they retired. The class action was filed in Kanawha Circuit Court on behalf of all former workers. Retired workers received a letter on December 15, 2006, stating that beginning January 1, 2007, they would have to pay for their benefits.

Apparently the union and M & G Polymers negotiated a contract on behalf of the current employees and the retirees, giving them the same health care benefits. According to the suit, the class members claim United Steel Workers, AFL-CIO, District 8 and other employees of USW, do not represent the retirees and cannot negotiate on their behalf.
