Charities to Share $14 Million Unclaimed Settlement in Class Action

This is a settlement for the lawsuit.

- by

A pool of $14 million will be shared by 34 charitable organizations in Ohio. The organizations are benefiting from a legal doctrine called "cy pres" which allows for the distribution of unclaimed awards in class action lawsuits.

Attorney Patrick Perotti, led the effort to arrange the Ohio cy pres awards. He was the lead counsel in a lawsuit against Grange Mutual Insurance Co., a $1 billion insurance firm based in Columbus. According to Perroti, the company overcharged auto policyholders for uninsured-motorist coverage and paid $51 million to settle the case.
