Greece Central School District

Greece, NY: (Aug-27-07) A class action lawsuit was brought against the Greece Central School District by parents of students with special needs, alleging that the district did not do enough for special needs children. The suit was filed in 2005 in federal court, by parents of eight Greece students, who asserted that the district did not live up to its legal obligations to provide a full range of services and programs for students with special needs. The parents who filed the class action suit remained anonymous. The suit sought to force the district to change its approach toward educating students with disabilities. It urged the school to offer special needs students the chance to take part in special education programs that fit their needs.

As part of a consent decree, approved by US District Court judge David Larimer, the district agreed to reemphasize to staff the variety of programs to be considered when designing educational plans for students; ensure the proper criteria are being used to evaluate students; and encourage open communication between staff and families regarding educational programs and services.
